CharacterEdit

Anime ikazuchi

AppearanceEdit

  • She has reddish-brown hair that is slightly disheveled in a similar manner to her sisters. The left side is adorned with a small red hairpin.
    • Another trait shared with her sisters is the matching colour of her eyes and hair.

PersonalityEdit

  • Very boisterous and a bit overconfident in contrast to her sister-ship Inazuma's timid behavior.
  • Aspires to be an onee-san-like figure, as evidenced by her desire to be relied upon by the admiral. This trait which contrasts with the class' somewhat juvenile behavior is emphasized as her moé point in a similar fashion to Akatsuki.

TriviaEdit

  • Sunk in action April 13, 1944 south of Guam (10°13′N 143°51′E). There were no survivors. She is near to the Mariana's Trench, so her depth is between 5-3 km below the surface.
  • On March 2, 1942, Ikazuchi rescued 442 survivors from the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Encounter (H10) and United States Navy destroyer USS Pope (DD-225). This humanitarian decision by Lieutenant Commander Shunsaku Kudō placed Ikazuchi at risk of submarine attack, and interfered with her fighting ability due to the sheer numbers of rescued sailors. Ikazuchi's prisoners were later turned over to appropriate entities. Kudo welcomed the prisoners aboard, and stated to them in English that he respected the prisoners as warriors of their own countries.
    • Perhaps in returning the favor, the prisoners were cooperative with Kudo's only order-- to not make noise that would attract enemy submarines, enabling all prisoner and crew to complete the journey safely.
    • Kudo did not report this rescue and kept this between himself and the crew. He was transferred to Hibiki afterwards. No word about the rescue came out especially after Ikazuchi sunk. Kudo died without revealing this, and it would take years before a former prisoner inside Ikazuchi, Sir Sam Falle, recalled how he was rescued by Kudo's crew.
    • Similar actions to rescued enemies would demand prisoners be put to death by higher authorities of the IJN, and Kudo wasn't the only Commander or Captain to have rescued enemies with the intent to return them safely. Aside from Inazuma, Tone too rescued prisoners, but as mentioned above, the prisoners were ordered beheaded by Vice Admiral Naomasa Sakonju, despite the strong protest of her captain and crew, Haruo Mayazumi and his XO Cdr. Junsuke Mii. The reason for the beheading order, apart from being prisoners from an enemy force, was that the presence of the prisoners would compromise their positions, prompting Sakonju to order the unthinkable, except for prisoners with potential intel value. The dissenting crews were tried after the war and given prison terms for carrying out the execution, while Naomasa, the brains behind the beheading was executed by hanging in 1948.
  • Her name means "thunder". Ikazuchi is a more poetic or archaic pronunciation of the character "雷", which is usually pronounced "kaminari", thus her intro quote.
    • If you combine Inazuma and Ikazuchi's Kanji characters, it forms the word Raiden "雷電”, or electricity. Kongou calls both of them as such as a pet name in the Anime adaptation.
  • The first Torpedo Boat Destroyers (TBDs) procured by the Japanese Navy ever was the Ikazuchi class in 1897~1899, making of Ikazuchi the very first name planned to be carried by a Japanese destroyer. The Akatsuki-based Ikazuchi is the second, and the basis of her Kancolle avatar. In the JMSDF, her name is used again, firstly leading her own class of destroyer escorts, and most recently, in the Murasame type of destroyers.
    • Although Ikazuchi is the first as she is the flagship in her eponymous TBD class in that time, Murakumo was completed ahead of 1899 Ikazuchi, although she had been laid down and launched after, so technically Murakumo is the first name carried by a Japanese TBD. This curious case is somewhat similar to what happened with Mutsuki and Kisaragi.
    • Inazuma was also the second ship of the 1899 Ikazuchi class, and Inazuma seems to be always together with her in succeeding ship classes, in being an Akatsuki-class destroyer, in becoming a JMSDF Ikazuchi class ship and a JMSDF Murasame class ship. This is probably because the meaning of their name is very similar (Lighting and Thunder tend to be associated with one another)
    • Despite not being the lead ship the Akatsuki class, Ikazuchi was launched and commissioned before any of her sisters. This may be the historical link and basis to her leadership personality that sometimes clashes with Akatsuki's.
