  • Dear all,

Morgane here. HandgunOtonashi and a few other folks from chat has kindly suggested that I put the discussion here for everyone to look at.

Tl;dr: English summaries of the official light novels, Y/N?

    Slightly longer version:

I've always been personally interested in the "lore" or stories behind the fandom. It just so happens that I've read and enjoyed some of the light novels, and thought that you guys might be interested in it as well.

I am well aware of the necessity of respecting copyright and intellectual property. As we lack a centralized "fandom" location for people to gather, I thought I would approach Wikia's community first to ask if it would be okay for me to:

    1. Post summaries - in the same way as I've summarized Cranes I - somewhere here, in the same way as I've done so in a few other places. I figure I'd ask here because reception for them has been nonexistent in other places, and I was chided for wasting my time and effort.

    So I thought I'd ask first. x)

I am primarily interested in bringing the Kagero LNs to light, as those keep on getting better and better. Seriously, I can't rave enough about this thing. Deliciously grimdark but with a sort of optimism found in the early 80s shonen works, the LN series is about a ragtag bunch of misfits that you'd never thought you would actually care about. The girls themselves are aware (in-universe) that they serve as little more than cannon fodder, but watching DesDiv14 solve things with little more than a hilariously large amount of hotbloodedness and the power of love and friendship is very, very rewarding.

I've attached a bit of a teaser (translation of vol. 3, first section of chapter 1) to whet everyone's appetites.

It‘s unfortunate that humanity is no longer master of the oceans.

In a time long past, mankind freely sailed the seven seas. Ships carried people and produce, linking land to land, continent to continent. The waters freely shouldered the responsibility of creating a better life for everyone.

But this idyllic time is no more. Now, the oceans have a new master. From the depths, this new master begun a ceaseless campaign of death and destruction. The seas became the birthplace and homeland of nightmares.

The name of this new master?

    The abyssal fleet.

Nobody knows where the abyssals came from. What they did know was that it was an enemy of humanity. Some think they are machine, others think they are organic. Still others believe that they are from somewhere in the universe. These matters scholars debate endlessly.

Whatever their origins may be, there is one way to fight them. A small group of specialized human beings, carrying miniaturaized weapons, are able to bring the fight to the abyssal fleet. These, are the guardians of humanity - ship girls. Young women equipped with weapons found on warships.

Sortiing out from the naval bases, the ship girls are locked in a relentless struggle against the abyssal fleet. Wherever the abyssals invade, the ship girls will fight back to retake the oceans for humanity. Sometimes they are victorious, othertimes, they are not.

All for the sake of peace. For the sake of restoring the oceans to what it once was.

And now, a ship girl belonging to Yokosuke naval base, is rapidly moving within a certain northern sector, somewhere in the oceans.

    2. Link places (to be determined by the community - I'm thinking something like Amazon) where the novels can be purchased.

As an additional thought, I'd like to propose that we allow for ...

    3. The direct translation of selected passages - something like the stuff above. I've posted examples of my own (very impromptu) translations for the Kagero LNs here and here . I believe stuff like this falls under fair use, especially if it's in context of discussing the work as a whole.

Sorry to make this sound overly pedantic or academic. What do you guys think? x) Because if you guys think it's a good idea, we should consider logistics. x)

    • iirc, we do have translation section, though I'm not sure for which content it was but probably for the manga. I Support

      — the revival of this section. If it's just summaries and few passages, then I think it'll be fine.

Right now Merchandise/Light_Novels also links to purchase websites.

    • As long as we don't end up translating the whole text or the whole book, I don't see why not. A short translation or summary (without spoiling the plot, of course) of each book should stir some interest in the lore. Or even better, hope that official publishers find enough interest to properly license the LN for real.

So, on this topic: I Support

      — the revival of this section.

ah I forgot to mention but I also said this to Handgun on chat, baka-tsuki is similar with multiple LN translations but some of then are taken down because of licensing. I am not sure how this applies to us, and if this applies even if we're just doing summaries.

As a fan who can't into runes and reads mostly translated LNs from baka-tsuki, I would love to read your translations. TBH, I've been curious about the content of the official kancolle LNs for a while and wanting to read them and so I've been lurking around /a/ for many times but most of the translations usually posted on kancolle threads are about the manga and the 4-koma.

May I also suggest (sorry if it sounds demanding) that the translations (full and/or summaries) be put into pdfs/epub format available for download? It would be great for those like me who reads translated LNs on mobile phones.

Thanks and looking forward to more of your works!!!

Some of them are taken down on baka tsuki because there are already some English publishers announced that they have obtained the license to print those light novel in english and thus those are taken down to protect copyright holder. None of those kancolle novel are licensed in English so that is not a problem here. However, I believe they are only for translation not summary.

    • English summaries of the official light novels is a great idea, with outright translations being even better. The latter can be a page akin to Merchandise/Manga/Fubuki, Ganbarimasu!'s or linked from a user blog, a depository, a personal website, or a dedicated website such as bakatsuki. As mentioned, licensed ones will have to be taken down, but we should be fine so long as they are not.

The existing summaries on Merchandise/Light Novels are depressingly short & vague, so any improvement is welcomed. Lengthy summaries, such as per volume or a comprehensive series overview, can be put in a collapsible or a specific page, such as Merchandise/Light Novels/KanColle: Kagerou, Batsubyou Shi Masu!

On the topic of bakatsuki, it'll probably be a great place to start given it's focus & community. Building a team may be easier & feedback will be quicker as the Merchandise section is slumbering at the moment. Well, given the help in the linked WoWS posts, perhaps it's already under control.

Depending on how much time people want to dedicate to such a project, a discussion regarding organization may need to occur to prevent a mismash & facilitate usability.

In a couple days, if there no objections on such an action, I'll create something for Morgane of the Mists' translations as a base to start off on.

    • So I've been in the translation scene for (quite) some time, and I have a couple of ideas I'd like to offer. May they appeal to you, though they appear to be more to my advantage:

      1. I advise not to host Kancolle translations on Baka-Tsuki. One, anything posted on Baka-Tsuki is strictly under the Baka-Tsuki administration's jurisdiction. While we see that it is more like a "free" host than anything, it remains a much safer alternative for us to organise a community here in the Wiki to translate. I know this because I've been there for some time before. Longer than I should.

      >Or you could just help me out at Chinjufu Channel, Chinjufu Scanlations or Kanamechan Translations. Haha. I'm not that bad.

      2. As the person who does a few of the Kancolle manga serializations at Chinjufu Scanlations, I suggest we merge operation - regardless the LN to Chinjufu or vice versa. It could very much be easier to establish an organisation in-charge of Kancolle-related serializations this way.

      ... I'm sounding very greedy now, aren't I?

But, what I would like all of you to consider is, work it out ourselves in the wiki or join with another Kancolle group. There's more of an unified identity this way.

    • if you don't want to follow baka tsuki's rule that much like following their community dicision on name or allow anyone to alter those content pasted there, you can also use the [1] method.

      — this 100%.

This is a good way to get the novels out there and interest more people in the lore/fanfic of 艦これ.

On another note, please indicate your interest if you would like to contribute to the translation. Translators and editors. It'd be good if someone could edit and typeset the novel images as well.

P.S. I'm particularly interested in Kakuyoku no Kizuna myself.

Kagero's LN is so far going on vol. 5 to my knowledge, and there's a reason for that that's not just moeblob cute or HAIL GRORIOUS IJN like some of the other LNs.

I've already done Cranes. It can be found on Himeuta. Obviously, if we are to put it on the wiki, I'd be cleaning it up and likely providing more details. Cranes II was so hilariously bad that I personally have little motivation to do anything with it.

While a full on translation would be desirable, I think it's as others have said - the legal implications may be undesirable for the community to handle. As I have received word that formal authorization for at least some of these novels have been confirmed for DMM Taiwan, I think it's best that we lean towards caution.

If other translation groups want to do a full on translation, go for it. I've already written the summaries for the first three volumes of the Kagero novels, as well as assorted lore commentaries. I don't see why multiple summaries would hurt this nascent lore effort - especially as each of us, like IRL literary or movie critics, will have different takeaway messages based on our experiences and perspectives.

My original proposal was that this was going to be an initiative by KanColle fans and for KanColle fans. I would personally like this to be an indepedent effort on behalf of the KanColle community (specifically the wiki) itself rather than formally linking it to any one particular translation team or group. The fact that a new website has emerged for the community makes this prime opportunity in my eyes to see just what the community here is capable of.

I don't care for personal glory and have little desire to reinvolve myself in the occasional squabbles that flare up (at least across the ocean) among the various translation/scanlation communities. I wanted to do this because I think these light novels deserve to be known. If my query has prompted interest in this - enough to get other people to work on it, then I'd say my goal of bringing up the suggestion in the first place has been accomplished. ;)

Think of people like me as a fan first and foremost. Not a translator, or a "loremaster", or whatever number of fancy titles. I want people talking about these novels and thinking about the big picture things behind KanColle - for those of us that might be interested in those things.
