I am using the monobook skin not the mobile skin, and the default behaviour of cases where hover not supported should be that those hover images should never be shown instead of all of them are shown
Nanamin added the tooltip code to MediaWiki:Wikia.css (Oasis skin), that is why it doesn't work in Monobook, poke him for moving it to MediaWiki:Common.css (all skins).
I originally asked for the hover images and have already found them useful. I certainly didn't mean to cause any grief for slow/limited connections. Nobody likes slow-loading web pages.
If further work is done, perhaps someone can generate a set of reduced size (1/2 or 1/4 of current) for hover images. That should speed things up somewhat.
Also, it would be nice (and perhaps helpful for slow loading) if no hover images display while the mouse is in motion, even if over the names. Best case would be to only have it display when the mouse has been stationary over the name for 2 seconds or so.

The way currently wikia is programmed is that if you adjust the display size of those images, what being affected is really just the disay size of those images but not the actual size they are transfer. To tramsfer only the thumbnail image, either you can link the thumbnailed images which i don't think wikia system do not currently allow displaying images via http link directly, or by uploading all those ship images again in thumbnail size which require quite much effort.
On the other hand, changing the triggering condition of mouse over does not help with slow connection as all those images are loaded when you enter that webpage, not when you hover over ship names
@Warvair compare sizes for and , not too much of a difference.
Too bad we can't do this.
But minna see Template:LinkImageTooltip#How To Disable It. It's unreliable, but seems to work on Chrome and Firefox (no tooltips and no loading when I tested it).

If one really wanted it to be as minimalistic as possible there are web browsers such as these and then one could block images as ads using adblocker or whatever.
Wait, Wikia can actually be accessed without an adblocker? That's news to me. I'm not using one of the clunky popular browsers either.
Can someone please clarify if there is a point behind these in the first place aside from completely new players who have no grasp of Japanese for their first few quests? Or is it just another feature creep?
It is meant to be helpful for newer players, but the suggestion was made here. Further work was put into it and so it was added.

Where did I say that you must use wikia without an adblocker? I only said that one could block images as ads using adblocker in a bid to minimalise the fancy effects on respective pages.
Sorry that came off very rude from me; I mean that I don't dare use Wikia without ensuring my adblocker is in place, otherwise things get very dicey.
Well anyway, since there is now an option to disable the hover images, if you wish, I will be closing this thread.
